Itching on Vulva & Pea Sized lump on Labia Majora

Hi. I am 34 years old and been married for 9 and a half years. Mid January I started itching on the vulva area and tried to rule out a new washing powder so I rewashed all my underwear, and went back to the previous washing powder. Used sudocrem as a moisturiser but no I improvement. I have been put on thrush treatment cream and it's now been two weeks and no change. Only yesterday I noticed a small lump, and I googled the area and it seems it's on the labia majora. I am now extremely worried. It doesn't hurt when touched and is the size of a pea and red. If you were to look for it you wouldn't see it. I only noticed it when putting the cream on, and had trimmed yesterday so if I hadnt trimmed I honestly think I would never have noticed it, which is worrying so could have been there for a while.

I stupidly googled it and now my itching and this lump combined sounds like vulva cancer. I am so scared. The surgery have closed to weekend appointment requests due to the covid vaccination program pressures so I have to wait until tomorrow morning. I have no abnormal discharge and my smear last year came back negative. The skin that is itchy is not in the same area, it's further up but only slightly red and itchy mainly when I am hot. The lump is on my right labia majora parrallel with the clitorus so I'm not convinced it's a gland cyst. Anyone else had this experience before?

  • When does it itch? Mine was always when I was not down there, mostly when I was wrapped up in my dressing gown and a blanket (I get cold easily ). If I was cold it never itched. I get itchy down there every now and again but not bad enough for me to make whole in my underwear with all the scratching like it was. I know we are not supposed to use anything like Aveeno down there but this one I use is an emolliant and it works wonders. I really hope you get to the bottom of it. The doctor prescribed the Daktacort for me to use 7 to 14 days, not just a week. Could you try that stuff again for a little longer? I think it was about 10 days for me before it completely went.

Buy the aveeno dermexa emoliant cream for when the steroid cream is finished to stop it flaring up again. Use it first thing and again in the evening. If that doesn't stop it, you know it's not dermatitis and to look for anything serious. Fingers crossed you get it sorted soon x

  • Thank you, it itches most of the time but probably worse at night, sorry I think I worded it wrong about the cream, I used/was prescribed to use Daktacort for 3 weeks 3X a day, but it started clearing up but after a week the itching started again and the cream didn't seem to be working anymore, carried on for the 3 weeks but was still itching.....(hope that makes sense ‍♀️)....I use an Aveeno Emoliant then for my babies dribble rash I might try it lol, anything is worth a shot. Thanks again

  • Hi Worrieduser and thanks for posting.

It does sound like you are having a worrying time.

We are unable to tell you what is wrong on this forum, but it does sound like it could be a Bartholin's cyst, there is some information about them on the NHS website here

Lumps on the labia are not normally a symptom of cervical cancer.  Most lumps and bumps are harmless and the cause will be something other than a cancer but it is always best to get this sort of thing checked out by your GP just to be sure. You said you have got an appointment, so they will be able to assess you and refer you if they are concerned.  Some people find keeping themselves busy whilst waiting for an appointment useful, as it can stop them feeling so anxious about what the lumps might be.

You mentioned that you have had level 3 high grade transforming cells and abnormal smears. It's understandable that this will make you very worried about the lumps you have found and wonder if it may be connected.  As I said lumps on the labia are not normally symptoms of cervical cancer.  Cervical screening is designed to prevent cancer, and find and treat changes to cells before they become cancer.  It sounds as if you are currently being closely monitored and have had the changes that were found treated.

When cancer is in the family, people often assume that this greatly increases their risk of developing it, but this isn't necessarily so. Although the genes we inherit may influence our risk, this may not be by very much. No one is risk free and the risk of cancer increases for all of us as we get older. This is quite a complicated topic and it might be useful to look at our section explaining genes and inherited cancer risk at this link.

Most cervical cancer is caused by HPV infections, although you do have an increased risk of cervical cancer if your mother, sister or daughter have had cervical cancer. We don’t know whether this is linked to faulty genes, or whether it is due to common shared factors like smoking.  Your GP will be able to explain more about this when you see them.

I hope that this is helpful.

Take care and please do get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You can call our helpline and talk things through with a nurse on Freephone 0808 800 4040, the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

  • Sorry to hear you've had such a worrying time. I hope your appointment went well. I've discovered two small lumps one on labia in the middle. My last smear 2021 was clear etc but now worried about symptoms of cancer. I'm 41, and been researching what it could be. How was your outcome once you'd visited your GP ?

    best wishes

  • Hi love,

Yes I saw my gp and it's cysts that I have which was a huge relief she said they will go away in time your symptoms seem to be exactly the same as mine but I'd still get them checked out for your own peace of mind good luck and please can you let me no your outcome please

    Best wishes

  • Thank you for your reply I really appreciate it. So glad yours turned out ok . Have they gone away now ? I've managed to get an appt with my actual GP next Friday which makes me feel more at ease as she's amazing and a specialist in gynae issues etc. We have cancer in the family so it's always something that worries me. I'll let you know what she says but appreciate you've taken the time to reply.
