Itching on Vulva & Pea Sized lump on Labia Majora

Hi. I am 34 years old and been married for 9 and a half years. Mid January I started itching on the vulva area and tried to rule out a new washing powder so I rewashed all my underwear, and went back to the previous washing powder. Used sudocrem as a moisturiser but no I improvement. I have been put on thrush treatment cream and it's now been two weeks and no change. Only yesterday I noticed a small lump, and I googled the area and it seems it's on the labia majora. I am now extremely worried. It doesn't hurt when touched and is the size of a pea and red. If you were to look for it you wouldn't see it. I only noticed it when putting the cream on, and had trimmed yesterday so if I hadnt trimmed I honestly think I would never have noticed it, which is worrying so could have been there for a while.

I stupidly googled it and now my itching and this lump combined sounds like vulva cancer. I am so scared. The surgery have closed to weekend appointment requests due to the covid vaccination program pressures so I have to wait until tomorrow morning. I have no abnormal discharge and my smear last year came back negative. The skin that is itchy is not in the same area, it's further up but only slightly red and itchy mainly when I am hot. The lump is on my right labia majora parrallel with the clitorus so I'm not convinced it's a gland cyst. Anyone else had this experience before?

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm afraid no one on the forum can tell you what the matter is, but it's possible that you may have a Bartholin's cyst. This is a harmless non-cancerous cyst.  You can read more about Bartholin's cysts by clicking here.

Try not to worry, vulva cancer is rare but when it does occur it usually affects women over the age of 60.

Even if there are other people who has experienced similar things it doesn't mean you will have the same outcome as them. the important thing is to be assessed by your own doctor and if needed they can arrange some tests for you. As the vulval itching has not resolved with thrush treatment, your GP may take vaginal swabs to check for infection and if needed will prescribe antibiotics to see if that improves things.

I hope you know more about your situation soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Thank you for replying,  I checked the location of my lump and it seems to high up to be a bartholins cyst; as it is more in line with the clitoris, however I could be wrong.

As it is so small I am hoping I have caught it early. I am waiting for a call back tomorrow so will see what the next step is. This is the only time I wish I was back at work as it would be a great distraction.

Here's hoping these are two completely different issues and nothing sinister x

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm sorry you have a health worry.

As I've said in my reply to Ajc86,I'm afraid no one can diagnose you on here. But lumps on or near the vagina are very common and may be due for a number of reasons, including a Bartholin's cyst  or a blocked sebaceous gland resulting in a cyst.

I think the best thing to do would be to make an appointment to see your GP to be on the safe side. Because of the current pandemic, it is likely that you may be offered a telephone appointment initially with your doctor. If they feel they need to see you, they can offer you a face to face appointment.

I hope you know more about your situation soon.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • I went in and the GP checked me down there.  She is assuming it is eiether a sebaceous cyst but more likely an ingrown hair but there is still possibility it's a sebaceous cyst and if it is then it might not even go away and she said the next step would be to get an ultrasound to see where it is located exactly. I did ask was surgery needed she said to me I highly don't think they will want to perform surgery but it's only painful for now because it's infected.

    so good news for now.

She did say if it does grow and cause more pain an ultrasound would be needed.

im praying for you now that you get answers from the doctor like I did. As an infected area because of a sebaceous cysts or an ingrown hair that is infected or something really minor.

  • Hello, sorry for the late reply been pretty hectic with my daughter since school pick up.

That's good news! Hopefully it won't be infected for long. I checked my lump this afternoon and really struggled to find it, may have shrunk? I am hoping it is a spot! However the spots I get on my face that you can feel and can't see are quite painful if you press on it however this lump doesn't hurt. Could have been a cyst that went down, but it has defintiely shrunk! Almost a petit pois size instead of normal pea. I will check it again in the morning first thing and tonight and keep you updated.

Hope your lump goes down and less painful :)

  • No problem with the late reply. I'm sure life is harder with a child because you have to do so much for them.

that's such good news! Hopefully it shrinks even more in the morning which will show that it was nothing serious.

hopefully the appointment you have tomorrow goes well tooxxx
