Pea sized lump on inner labia

Sorry, I know this is really gross. I’m 20 and have so much anxiety about everything, especially Health and I know it’s wrong but I am constantly on google/nhs/web md etc.

I have found a hard smaller than pea size lump on my vulva/ upper inner labia (above the clitorus) it is immovable but it not visible unless the skin is stretched and doesn’t hurt unless squeezed but I’m really worried it’s vulva cancer. It can’t be an STI as I’m not sexually active and it’s not an ingrown hair as there is no hair there.

I’m really worried

  • Hey, I know this is old and I'm sorry to ask questions that isnt your job to answer but I am 23 and have a just larger than pea size lump on my upper labia majora, not quite inside the lips but right on the crease where it touches the other one, hair does grow there but it is definitely not an ingrown hair as I've had many and it's nothing like it and I've also had a bartholin cyst (or however its spelt) when I was pregnant and it was much further inside, closer to my inner lips below my clitorus and was smaller, non painful and went within 2 days but I've had this now 4 days and its sore to touch.. I have been too nervous to ring the doctors and now it's the weekend so have to wait till monday now, just concerned as i dont know what I'm looking for.

    Thankyou!xx

  • Im 26 yrs old and have a painful lump on the outside of my labia which is nearer my clitorus. I believe it to be a cyst but I wasn't sure if it is possible in that location as I though they are nearer the vaginal opening. Really don't want to have to make a gp appointment if I don't need to. I've been having warm baths to try and help. But I was just wondering can you get cysts so high up?

  • Hello and thanks for posting on the forum,

You can get cysts in all sorts of places and I am sorry to hear that it is feeling so uncomfortable.

Whenever anyone complains about new symptoms that they are concerned about we always suggest that they get checked out by their GP. Don't be put off by the pandemic, GPs still want to hear from us about things like this. Most GP surgeries are arranging telephone appointments with the GP who talks things over with you before deciding what needs to be done.

As my colleague has said in previous chats there are many reasons for lumps on the labia and most won't be anything as serious as cancer. We can't diagnose you, but if it is painful you may find that you have an infection that may need a course of antibiotics.  It maybe something called a Bartholin cyst which is very common. You can read about this on the NHS website here.

I think these are usually further away from the clitoris but there are other glands can block and infected, so it is best to get some proper medical advice.

I do hope that it gets better soon.

    All the Best,

    Catherine

  • Hi and thanks for your post

Pea sized lumps can be very common as they can be cysts or blocked sebaceous glands that are found in this area. If it's getting sore to the touch though, it may be a sign of infection , so it's best to ring the GP for further advice.

Cancer at your age is rare so try and not worry about this. It may be a telephone conversation initially with the GP , but they can always ask to see you if necessary.

    All the best

  • Hiya,

sorry to but in on this thread. I had sort of similar issue. I have a tiny zit like spot just on the inside of vagina lip as it were. It's slightly red in colour and it's hard to notice it, I only notice it when shaving, it become flatter when stretched. It's not sore or bothersome. I just wondering what it is as I had genital warts when I was 19-20 and I 28 now. I had a Pap smear few weeks ago and the result came back with normal cells but positive for HPV, to which I have been recommended to have another routine Pap smear same time next year to see whether the hpv has cleared on its own or if need to have a colposcopy. So I worried this little spot is vulva cancer. But also can the strain of hpv that cause genital warts come back after such a long time? Also I'm in a long term relationship so worried as to why hpv is present. I wana know what this spot is! It doesn't necessarily resemble the wart I had all them years ago as it much smaller but still unsure. And also can the strain of hpv that cause warts can that be picked up on a Pap smear result? I don't know what to do.

    Kind regards xx

  • Hi and thank you for posting

Vulval cancer is rare and at your age it would be unlikely for you to have this.

If you haven't already pointed out the spot when you had your smear and you're still worried, do make an appointment to get it checked out as only an examination will help someone diagnose what this may be.

There are low grade and high grade HPV infections. Genital warts and verrucas are low grade HPV viruses while high grade HPV is only picked up on a cervical smear.

The high grade HPV virus is very commonly picked up in the majority of  people who have sex and usually the immune system will be able to deal with it, although sometimes it can take a few years to eradicate it.It's transmitted via skin to skin genital contact so although wearing a condom can help,it can't completely protect you.You can read more about the different HPV viruses here

It's also worth bearing in mind that you will never know when you first got it , as the virus can stay ' hidden' in the system for very many years, resurfacing sometimes many years later. So it's not possible to know when you may have first picked up HPV.

So as you're concerned, ring the GP for further advice. They will be able to examine you and hopefully be able to say what this may be.

    All the best

  • I'm almost 41 and have found a lump on my labia minora.

It's very painful and has grown over the last couple of days and now looks like two lumps.

I will do my best to get seen by a GP but it may not be easy due to lockdown. I notice a lot of your replies say it's very rare for girls aged in their 20's to get vulva cancer.

At what age is it not so rare?

    Many thanks in advance.

  • Hey,

Sorry to be a bother, but like the women in this chain, i have found a similar pea sized lump on my inner labia. It's painful when i touch it and i often find it quite itchy. I'm only 16 and still a virgin and so i know it's nothing to do with an STD. I'm a strong over thinker and so my google searches worried me. It's fairly hard and doesn't have a head that i could pop so i’m curious to know what it is. Apologies for being slightly graphic but could i have some help as I also cannot go to the doctors due to the pandemic so i don't know what to do.

    Thank you :)

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

As my colleague Wanda said pea sized lumps are very common.  The most common cause is a blocked sebaceous gland or a cyst.  If it is painful when you touch it, it maybe a sign that you have a small infection so you may need a course of antibiotics.

Even though the corona virus pandemic is happening GPs are still encouraging people to get in touch with them. In the first instant the GP's are arranging telephone appointments.  You could request a female GP if one was available.  Doctors are so used to talking to patients about conditions in intimate places and I am sure that they will put you at ease.

Vulval cancer is rare and is even rarer at your young age so try not to worry about it. You may find it helpful to talk it through with a trusted adult.

I do hope that it feels better soon and that you manage to have a chat with a doctor.

    Best Wishes,

    Catherine
