Pea sized lump on inner labia

Sorry, I know this is really gross. I’m 20 and have so much anxiety about everything, especially Health and I know it’s wrong but I am constantly on google/nhs/web md etc.

I have found a hard smaller than pea size lump on my vulva/ upper inner labia (above the clitorus) it is immovable but it not visible unless the skin is stretched and doesn’t hurt unless squeezed but I’m really worried it’s vulva cancer. It can’t be an STI as I’m not sexually active and it’s not an ingrown hair as there is no hair there.

I’m really worried

  • Hi, I know it's been a few months since somebody wrote on this thread but I found it in a Google search. I have been having abnormal bleeding everyday for over 2 months and I have now found a small, hard lump on my outer labia. It is not painful at all. I have had blood tests and an US which were normal and am waiting on a smear test result for the bleeding. The lump is new and I haven't told my GP yet. I'm in my early 30's and very anxious. As there are nurses on here, please can you advise on if a transvaginal US or a smear can diagnose vulva cancer. Thank you.

  • Hope everyone who has shared is doing ok now

I have a pea size lump now my right side of inner  lip I have right sided groin sensitivity and left side outer lip sensitivity to touch!! I also had vin 3 3 years on the right side of my outer lip. It was surgically removed the whole lip and womb cancer nearly 12 years ago!! I first thought it was a cyst or boil or from a shaving cut so I didn't shave for a while shaved tonight and it's grown a lot and it is not painful it can not be more around either I have a urologist appointment Tuesday shall I get them to take a look???? Thank you for your time xxx

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you have been having some symptoms that are currently being looked into.

The thing to remember with all symptoms is that there can be many causes and most of the time the problem is caused by something far less serious than a cancer. However it is always best to get symptoms that don't go away or worsen ,checked out by a doctor to be on the safe side.

Likewise, lumps in the labia or vulva area often are caused by bartholins cysts that you can read more about here,or blocked sebaceous glands that causes a hard small lump or infection and irritation.  Cancer of the vulva would be unlikely in someone of your age and there is likely to be a straightforward reason, but if you are concerned do mention it to your GP who will probably want to take a look. And ultrasound and cervical smear is unable to diagnose vulval cancer, as an examination, biopsy of the vulva and other scans are usually needed to diagnose this type of cancer.

I hope this help and everything settles down for you soon.

    Take care

    Naomi

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about the problems and treatment you have had in the past and appreciate why this new lump you have found is worrying you.

There can be a number of reasons for lumps to appear in this area including as you have said a cyst, blocked sebaceous glands or infection. But when the lump doesn't go away or gets worse it is best to get it checked by the doctor just to be on the safe side.

So yes, it you haven't already been to the appointment, I think it is perfectly reasonable to mention this to your urologist and see if they can take a look when you see them.

I hope the appointment goes well. Do get back in touch of you want to.

    Take care

  • Hello, I also found a pea size lump inside my inner labia minora not far down from my clirorus. I'm not sure how long it had been there as hadn't felt it before, it was only sore to touch when I squeezed. When I did a small amount of puss came out and then blood and big squirt of it.

its now very sore and I'm very worried ive made a mistake squeezing if it wasn't a cyst.

please help I am so worried now

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm sorry you have a health worry.

As you will see from my colleagues response to previous chats to this thread there are many reasons for lumps on the labia and most won't be the result of anything as serious as cancer.

Only a doctor can make a medical assessment so the best thing for you to do is to make an appointment and see your GP. Because of the impact the coronavirus is having on NHS services, it can be hard to get a GP appointment right now. It’s more likely you will be offered a telephone appointment initially with your doctor. After the telephone consultation, if they feel they need to see you, they can offer you a face to face appointment.

I hope you know more about your situation soon.Give us a ring if you wold like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

  • I have a pimple like spot on my inner labia too and I'm not sure if it is normal to get pimples there sometimes and I'm really hoping it's not hpv as I've asked my boyfriend and he said he's clean but I've been crying and worrying non stop I'm only 16 and apparently they take a very long time to go (2 years max) and I honestly don't know what to do I want it to be gone. And because we're in lockdown I can't see my GP I have to have the consultation over the phone.

  • Hello Lilyh and thanks for posting,

It is possible to get pimples/spots in this part of the body and glands under the skin can sometimes get blocked. So this may not be anything to do with HPV.  Some sub-types of HPV can cause warts, but don’t assume what this is for now.

Because we aren’t in a position to ever say what could be the matter, our standard advice is to see the GP about anything new like this. As you know, because of the situation with coronavirus, GPs are talking to patients on the phones first before deciding what needs to be done and whether or not to see them face to face. I can’t say what your GP will do, but I think it would still help to try and talk this over with them and I hope they can reassure you.

Try not to fret too much. Sometimes worry can run away with us and we have to focus on trying to find a way to get on top of it. You might want to look at the every mind matters website  to see if any of their tips about coping with worry, anxiety and stress could be useful.

    All the best,

    Julia
