Pea sized lump on inner labia

Sorry, I know this is really gross. I’m 20 and have so much anxiety about everything, especially Health and I know it’s wrong but I am constantly on google/nhs/web md etc.

I have found a hard smaller than pea size lump on my vulva/ upper inner labia (above the clitorus) it is immovable but it not visible unless the skin is stretched and doesn’t hurt unless squeezed but I’m really worried it’s vulva cancer. It can’t be an STI as I’m not sexually active and it’s not an ingrown hair as there is no hair there.

I’m really worried

  • Hi

If you have symptoms or concerns that haven't been fully addressed by your GP then ask them to refer you to gynecologist.  If they think its necessary the gynaecologist can do a smear test for you.  If you have any symptoms like unusual discharge, pain during or after sex or bleeding after sex then talk to your doctor about this.   Also if you had the HPV vaccination when you were younger it is probably quite unlikely that you would develop cervical changes that might lead to cervical cancer.  But if you have any  symptoms talk to your doctor about them to be on the safe side.

    I hope this is helpful

  • Glad you sorted your problem! I’m 19 and have just found a quite hard pea sized lump on my inner labia. I have managed to get a GP appointment tomorrow so hopefully everything will be okay. Despite being a medical student, I also have a lot of health anxiety, particularly surrounding cancer so I’m rather worried.

To the others who have posted about finding lumps, what were the outcomes? Thanks

  • Mine turned out to be a cyst and  went down by its self. I was so worried and the wait for the GP appointment was the worst time for my anxiety but as soon as I'd seen the doctor he examined me and said he wasnt worried at all I felt better.

I'm so glad so many people are going to get checked out at the doctors so they can also put their mind to rest.

    Wishing everyone luck. X

  • Thankfully mine also turned out to be a cyst. I completely understand your anxiety, I knew that a cyst was what it was likely going to be because of all the glands in that area but I tend not to think rationally about my own health!

  • Hi

ive found a lump and it's hard and it feels more like a ball. I'm 18 so I dunno if it's cancer. It's hard and I can move it. Very painful to touch. Any ideas

  • Best to get it check out to always be on the safe side but it sound alot like a cyst.

It's hard not to worry when its unknown. I know going to the doctors is embarrassing but ask to see a nurse if that would make you feel more comfortable. If it's a cyst it normally passes in a few days or so.

    Good luck

  • If it's painful and movable it does sound like a cyst or infected follicle. Keep an eye on it, try holding a hottish flannel against it while you shower or bathe. If it's infected this can help draw it to a head. Don't squeeze, it's really tempting but not a good idea. If it doesn't go away mention it to your GP. Try not to worry, I've had similar things on and off since I was a teenager, I think some of us are just prone to them.

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

You may have a bartholin cyst which is extremely common. These can get blocked or infected. Sometimes they clear up or need antibiotics.

Do go and see your GP who can assess you and advise you.

    I hope this helps.

  • Hello, I'm only 19 so I'm aware cancer for the vagina is rare for someone young but this morning, I woke up and felt pain there, I checked and it looked like a white head you'd get on your face but it was sensitive and painful to touch, I ended up popping it and it reacted like a normal spot but there is a sort of lump underneath it. I'm not sure if it's swelling or pressure from the spot, if it's a cyst or if it's something I should really worry about, it's on the labia, nearer to the bottom and after I popped it, it looked a bit like an ingrown hair spot.

Should I worry about it or should I not? I don't know how I'd tell my mum this either since she's either be like "Oh you'll be fine" or if she'll start to really worry

  • Hello CameraCookie and thanks for posting,

People often ask us if they should be worried, but it is much the same as asking us what is wrong which we can never say. This is in case we give people false reassurance and they don't go to see their GPs when they really should.

I don't think you need to worry overly about cancer just because it would be very unusual in your age group. And this could just be a spot that goes away by itself. So you could decide to keep an eye on it and wait to see if it settles down, if not, and it is getting more painful or inflamed, you will need to get someone to take a look at it, either your GP or the practice nurse at the surgery. You might need antibiotics.

So I don't think it is a question of worrying, but being sensible and getting some face to face medical advice if things don't get better.

    Take care,

    Julia
