My brothers cancer diagnosis

this is more a post to ask advice…

my brother who is 48 was diagnosed with both lung and liver cancer two weeks ago. He fell ill, took himself to hospital whereby he was scanned and bloods taken.
He had a liver biopsy taken, they told him that they believe the type of cancer it is has probably spread to his kidneys, bladder and pancreas.

The oncologist has told him they can’t offer him treatment, he’s liver is more cancer than liver and he is too underweight. They’ve prescribed him ensure and told him to eat mainly protein and fat.  He tries to eat but finds it uncomfortable and lacks appetite.  He is very underweight, you can see his bones and the shape of his skull.

he is at a pep scan today (I think that’s what it’s called) to see exactly where else it is.

i wonder if there is something they could offer him to promote his appetite? To help him to put weight on.

I know they’ve said they can’t treat him with chemo but is there anything else they could offer? I know there isn’t a cure but isn’t there something they could offer to give him a better quality of life and hopefully to prolong his life?

thanks in advance

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your brother, this must be a very difficult time for all the family.

Try and encourage your brother to eat little and often as well as taking supplement drinks to try and increase his calorie intake. Sometimes doctors will prescribe a short term course of steroids that can also improve the appetite so do also speak to the doctors about what may be possible.

Treatment decisions are based on the type and stage of cancer as in the size and extent of it alongside the general health and fitness levels of a patient. It does sound like your brother is extremely poorly and because of this the doctors may be thinking it may cause more harm than good to give him treatment. However even if there aren't many treatment options they will offer palliative care which is all about managing symptoms and giving people the best quality of life for as long as possible.

It sounds like they have arranged a pet scan to give them further information about where the cancer is. They will probably discuss his case in a MDT multi disciplinary team setting to talk through what is and isn't possible before discussing it with your brother and next of kin.

Hopefully you will know more soon but do get back in touch if you need to and you are welcome to call the helpline if you would like to talk any of this through over the phone. Our number is 0808 800 4040 and we're here weekdays 9-5.

    Take care
