Mri - I have an appointment for when I'll get the results, but not the actual procedure. Is this normal?

Hi  I recieved news yesterday that a lump I found just above my breast is very likley cancerous. Everything after this news is a bit or blur but I recall that the consultant mentioned an MRI and has booked my biopsy and MRI results appointment in for 3 weeks time, however I do not have an MRI appointment. Should they have given me this yesterday or will a recieve a notification about it? X

  • I had an appointment yesterday and they have ordered for me to have an MRI ,I didn't get an appointment date for it whilst I was there .

My cns said I will get a call for when to go in for it and I should either have it this week or early next week , I have an MDT booked for the 23rd.

When is your biopsy booked for ? I would assume you'll probably get a call with a date to come in that is before the biopsy if they don't do it the same day as the MRI.

  • Hi Thank you for getting back to me. Sorry to hear you are also going through this. I had the biopsy yesterday at my initial appointment. Was shocked hear there and then that  its highly likley cancer. I think i just wrnt numb any any information given after that washed over me.

The consultant said the appointment in 3 weeks will be to discuss results of both mri and biopsy. I dont recall her saying when the MRI will be though or how I will hear about when it will be :/ x

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry you are suspected of having breast cancer and it's completely understandable that after hearing that news, it was hard to take in the rest of what was said at your appointment.

In many breast clinics, if the consultant wants an MRI, the scan is requested after the clinic appointment, and the appointment itself is not usually given to you on the day. It is common to receive the MRI appointment later by letter, text message, phone call, or through your NHS App.

The biopsy is usually the most important test for confirming whether a lump is cancerous, and an MRI is often used to provide additional information about the breast and surrounding tissue, particularly when cancer is suspected or confirmed.

If you've not heard anything within a week or so, you may want to ring the breast clinic or breast care nurse to check when your scan will be.

I hope this has been of some use. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
