Waiting a week for news. Does it usually take that long?

Hi, I had my biopsies taken 10 days ago, told the lump and swollen lymph node were highly suspicious for breast cancer. I was told I’d get news in 10 days about confirmation and treatment plan after an MDT mtg.  I was called today to book an appointment a week today. Do you usually have to wait that long to hear the news?

  • Hello FrenchLass, and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear that you are going for investigations and I can only imagine how stressful this must be for you.

It is not unusual to have to wait a little bit longer then ten days.

A Breast MDT usually meets once a week to discuss all the patients with a potential breast cancer diagnosis. These lengthy meetings can often take several hours as each patient is presented in detail and all the different tests are looked at. If there are too many patients on the list then they are sometimes discussed on the following week.

I am not sure if this was the situation in your case but hopefully you will know more when you see the doctors.

Some patients find it helps to keep busy and your mind distracted whilst you are waiting.

You are very welcome to ring and chat through any of this with one of the helpline nurses.

The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • Thanks for your reply, by the time of the appt, it will have been 2,5 weeks and it just feels so long! Trying to stay busy, but it’s not easy!
