I've just had a rectum polypectomy at the entrance to my rectum 10 days ago. Yesterday i had some bright red blood when i tried to have a poo then wiped. It cleared up almost stright way.It was just the once. Today it's happened again. is this normal?

  • Hi Jen.A, and thank you for posting,

It can take up to a couple of weeks for the area to heal fully after a polypectomy, so it is not unusual to notice some minor bleeding during this time.

From what you have described, it sounds as though you have had a couple of small episodes of bleeding that stopped quickly on their own. If this has only happened a few times and you are otherwise feeling well, it is likely to be part of the normal healing process.

However, if you pass a large amount of blood (more than a few tablespoons) or blood clots, develop tummy pain that does not improve, or feel generally unwell with a fever or flu-like symptoms, it is important to contact your hospital team. They are best placed to assess your symptoms and advise you further.

Based on what you have told us, the bleeding was limited to a couple of episodes, settled quickly, and is not accompanied by any other symptoms. This is reassuring and can be expected as the polypectomy site heals.

However, if you remain concerned, if the bleeding becomes more frequent or heavier, or if it continues beyond two weeks after the procedure, contact the team that carried out the procedure or your GP for further advice.

    Take care.

    Jemma
