Breathing issues post Anaphalaxis - Has anyone else experienced this? How long will it last?

Hi all, being treated for bowel cancer and 3 months ago had a severe reaction to Chemo IV drug Oxaliplatin on 2nd round so can't have it again - continuing on with Capcetibine oral tablets. Since the reaction my breathing is off - get breathless, was given Ventalin, not sure if it helps, they did CT and ECG (both ok) and waiting on Echo results but cant seem to find out how long this breathlessness will last? My lungs were fine going into this. Any ideas/similar experiences? Thanks for reading.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I’m sorry to read about what's been happening and can appreciate this must be a worrying time for you.

Some people can have ongoing breathlessness for weeks or even a few months after a severe reaction to oxaliplatin, especially if the reaction affected the airways. Serious lung damage from this drug is rare and usually shows up on a CT scan, which makes your normal CT scan encouraging.

Oxaliplatin reactions can occasionally affect the heart, which is why the echocardiogram has been requested, although a normal ECG is reassuring.

Many people improve gradually once oxaliplatin is stopped, but recovery times vary considerably depending on the underlying cause. I’m not sure if your specialist team has referred you to a respiratory specialist or recommend you have breathing tests. If they haven’t, do ask them if this is appropriate for you.
