Chemo care

Hi, my brother is going in for chemo next week and I am looking for the best moisturisers and shower wash.  Also are the cold gloves and socks a good idea and when to use them? Thank you.

  • Hi, my husbands been through chemo and I would highly recommend that you get thermal socks and gloves. He  still feels the cold still three months later.

Thank you for replying.  He feels the cold anyway so I think the socks and gloves are a must.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

For anyone undergoing chemotherapy, when choosing products, look for terms like "hypoallergenic," "for sensitive skin," and "fragrance-free". Avoid products containing alcohol, alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), or strong active ingredients.

Your brother should avoid hot showers, which strip the skin of natural oils. He should use lukewarm water, pat his skin dry gently, and apply moisturiser within a few minutes of stepping out to lock in hydration. We have an online shop that has products by MooGoo which are aimed at sensitive skin conditions.

Aveeno fragrance free skin relief body wash is easily obtained from larger pharmacies, and has oatmeal, which helps calm and protect skin. La Roche Posay also have a soap free gentle cream wash, and they do skin creams as well.

Cold gloves and scalp cooling techniques are only used at the time of the chemotherapy drug being given. Therefore, he must consult his oncologist or chemotherapy nurse before buying or using them. Some cancer centres have their own specialized, cooling machines, while others may advise against cold therapy depending on his exact drug regimen or specific medical history. They are not necessary for some chemotherapy drugs. These are different from thermal gloves.

Do check this out with the medical team.

    I hope this helps.

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
