Psa test

Hello there I’m frantically asking for some clarity. My Dad has just phoned. He’s been for a psa test today after having one 18 months ago where there found cancerous levels but not so high as to do anything with at the time.

His test was at 10 this morning, he then had a call from the Drs surgery asking him to go in tomorrow to discuss his psa results. Are they able to turn around results so quickly in a day? He is beside himself with worry. Thank you for any help.

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I am sorry you have this worry about your dads PSA results, the not knowing can be a very stressful time.

It may be that they knew his results would be available by the time he went to his appointment today. Particularly if he has had raised levels before.

Unfortunately until he goes to the doctors today no one can say what maybe happening, but do get back to us if he is given further information.

Take care and if he, or you, want to call our helpline to go through anything then do call 0808 800 4040. Lines are open mon-fri, 9-5 (closed BH).

    Sarah.

  • Thanks Sarah for your reply. He’s been this morning and his osa level is 14. He’s been referred to oncology. We are all so afraid and don’t know what is going to happen.

  • Hi there- my husband was diagnosed with prostate  cancer 4 years ago. They said it was low grade, localised & due to his age (he was then 72) he would most likely die ‘with it’ rather than ‘because of it’ because it can take up to 30 years to develop (if at all).  They didn’t recommend any treatment but put himon active surveillance (6 monthly blood tests to check PSA levels) & so far ( ) he’s not needed any other treatment.  His PSA levels have been at 14 before which they didn’t feel warranted concern.  When you hear the word ‘cancer’ your mind goes into over-drive but our experience over the last 4 years whilst he’s just been on active surveillance has been very positive.  Hopefully, your Dad’s experience will be the same.  Best wishes to you & your family.
