Post menopausal bleeding - looking for advice or reassurance

I’ve been post menopausal for over a year and a half. 11 weeks ago I had a week of heavy bleeding, clots and pain/cramps. I was given a fast track appointment which showed everything looked normal but endometrial lining was 8mm so had a ‘blind’ biopsy which was normal. cA-125 also normal. However, pain has persisted ever since, and a week ago another heavy bleed lasting a week ( clots and pain even worse). Doctor said there’s no point sending me for a scan as so soon after last one, so has given me progesterone tablets. The pain is in one particular place lower left hand side of pelvis and lower back pain same side. I’m worried incase something just wasn’t picked up on the scan/biopsy but also know I worry a lot. I’d appreciate some advice or reassurance, thank you.

  • Hello tb159 and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your symptoms. It is reassuring that the tests and examinations have all come back without any worrying features. I would wait and see whether the progesterone tablets have any effect on your symptoms.

I would go back and discuss your pain if it is not getting any better.

Hormonal changes during the menopause can cause heavy bleeding and irregular periods and it can in some cases take a while for these to be regulated.

The NHS have produced some information on things you can do to help peri menopause and the menopause. This includes tips on how to incorporate gentle exercises in your day and tips on eating a healthy diet. Yoga can help with pain symptoms and help relax and manage anxiety.

You could ask to see another GP in the practice if you feel like you would like a second opinion. Do let them know that it is making you feel very anxious particularly the pain that you are experiencing.

I am not sure where you are living in the UK but it may be helpful to see if you could be referred to a menopausal clinic if there was one in your area.

I really do hope that you are feeling better soon.

You are very welcome to ring one of the nurses on the helpline if you would like to talk any of this through.

The number to ring is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • Thank you for your reply, it is very reassuring. I will wait it out unless the pain becomes unmanageable. I am a member of a gym but have found that is too painful at present, once the bleeding has stopped I will return to my swimming as this is more gentle on the whole body.
    Many thanks again,
