Transvaginal ultrasound not clear

I had one instance of very light spotting for 2 days – I had my last perios 18 months ago. I mentioned it to my GP and I have just had external and internal ultrasounds. The results came back as 'inconclusive' because they couldn't get a full picture. I have a tilted uterus and wonder if that could be the cause. Rather than offering to scan again, I have been offered a hysteroscopy (which I do not really want to do). Can I request a second scan to see if a clearer image is seen? I have had transvaginal scans in the past with zero issues. It seems a bit like a nuclear option to make me go through a hysteroscopy when they could just have said it wasn't clear and tried again.

  • Hi Hopskotch71 and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to learn about your situation.

It is understandable to feel unsure about having a hysteroscopy, especially if you were expecting another scan first.

It is ok to ask whether you could have a repeat scan, especially as you have had successful transvaginal scans in the past.

But if the ultrasound did not give enough information, your doctors may need to find another way to check the lining of the womb.

hysteroscopy allows them to look directly inside the womb and, if needed, take a small sample for testing. It can give more information than an ultrasound alone.

If you are worried about the procedure, it is reasonable to ask your GP or the gynaecology team why they feel a hysteroscopy is needed rather than repeating the scan.

They should explain the reasons and discuss any other options with you so that you can make an informed decision.
