Actinic cheilitis

Hi, I think I may have Actinic cheilitis but when I have tried to speak to my GP they just do a phone consultation and say it's eczema. It's hard to arrange an appointment because I don't know when symptoms will be showing. I have also tried to go to a pharmacy when it is in a flare and they looked at me and just said I don't know what it is. I match the symptoms, and sun makes it worse. What can I do to get my GP to take me seriously or is there anywhere else I can go to get it checked as I'm genuinely worried?

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about the symptoms you have and your worries about this being actinic cheilitis (keratoses)

We would suggest trying to be reviewed by a different GP to get this looked at. Usually GPs are very experienced at assessing skin conditions and advising on treatments to try and clear them up. If a doctor is concerned it could be something more serious or the treatments aren't resolving symptoms they will normally refer on to a skin specialist (dermatologist).

You can read more about Actinic keratoses which is a pre cancerous skin condition on the British Association of Dermatologist BAD website to find out how it is normally managed.

There are varying degrees of this skin condition and not all are serious and lead to cancer. Some mild forms don't always need treatment and can clear up by itself. There is advice on the information sheet about looking after your skin and things to try and help in the meantime.

Unfortunately many people referred to see a dermatologist on the NHS are waiting a long time to be seen at the moment. If people are anxious about their situation they are considering a private consultation but I realise this isn't an option for everyone.

I hope you get some more clarity and peace of mind about this soon.

Do get back in touch if you want to or give us a call on 0808 800 4040 if you prefer. We're here weekdays 9-5.

    Take care
