Baby and me asbestos exposure

Around 2 years ago my partner sanded our artex swirl ceiling.. we were unaware about asbestos.. our house was built somewhere between 1986 and 1990
I remember the amount of thick dust, he kept the door closed until it settled and he could wipe down and hoover. Using a normal hoover.. the room was half done.. we went to bed, 1 year old in room and then he finished it another day, same process. Then when it was done sealed and painted.
After learning the artex probably contained the white asbestos I am beside my self with anxiety and worry about my daughter.. I know there is no way of knowing of any future health complications but I feel like it’s inevitable and like I am the worst parent ever,
I don’t know what I’m asking really..?
but does this exposure count as high exposure as we slept in the room that day..? And it hadn’t been finished yet.. the air still felt dusty, I feel awful and that she will get sick when she’s older.. I don’t even care about myself!
im worried that we also have an aircon unit in that room so it’s been blowing at us and her ever since.. the room seems to get quite dusty easily and I keep thinking it’s asbestos.. and the carpet is probably riddled…

  • To add.. I feel like our DIY experience generated a lot more dust than most of the stories I’ve read.. the room was a thick cloud of smoke

  • Anyone have any thoughts?

  • There is a lot of discussion on this subject on the forum if you search. The general consensus is unless you have worked professionally with asbestos over decades you are unlikely to come to any harm. I had an asbestos check in my home it cost around £180. It could put your mind at ease.

  • What company did you use? Did they test the air quality

yes that’s also my understanding I have read so many posts! My fear is my daughter as she was so young and slept in the room with us.. we used a normal household hoover and have used that same hoover the last year all around the house, also an aircon unit

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I expect a lot of people have had occasional exposure to asbestos without coming to any harm. So try if you can not to be overly worried about this. It is regular occupational exposure to asbestos over many years that is known to increase the risk of lung disease and cancer, often two or three decades later.

According to the Health and Safety Executive (which is really about health and safety at work), short term exposures with asbestos will most likely have led to minimal exposure to fibres and is very unlikely to have any long-term ill health effects. You can also read more about this on the British Lung Cancer Foundation website.

I hope this helps and remember you can always ring your GP if you still feel concerned. You can also give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,
