Reintroducing foods

Hi, today marks 5 weeks after a colon resection operation. I'm pretty happy with how things are going and I'm using the toilet fairly consistently, although I have had a couple of odd days with some diarrhea. My issue is reintroducing different foods again, especially vegetables and salad, both of which were a big part of my diet before. I have managed carrot and swede, potato and the foods from the low residue diet. However, I'm second guessing myself about what to do next, but I can't just keep eating chicken, bananas etc.

I'm really sorry if this sounds a bit trivial but I don't want to get it wrong and be back to a really bad stomach. Any advice would be gratefully received, thanks.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

It's great to hear that you seem to be doing really well 5 weeks after your surgery.

The occasional bout of diarrhoea is quite common while your bowel is still settling. Do let your doctor or nurse know if it keeps happening, as they can give you medicine to help control it. It is important to drink plenty of fluids if you have diarrhoea.

Your bowel should start to work more normally after a few weeks. But particular foods may upset things. You may need to experiment with your diet to find out which foods cause a problem for you.

As the bowel settles down you may find that you can start to eat these foods again later on. Everyone is different and there are no set rules about what you should eat.

It might be a good idea for you to keep a food diary. This can help you keep a record of what you eat, when you eat, and if you experience any digestive problems and when you have them. Looking back over a weekly diary, you may be able to spot which foods are causing you problems and then cut them out. You may be able to try the foods again in a few weeks to see if your bowel has settled or if it causes the same problem.

If you continue to have problems, you can ask to see a dietician at the hospital. They can give you tips and help you to work out which foods upset you.

I hope this helps. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,
