pressure from colonoscopy dept

The colonoscopy department at the hospital just rung me wanting me to make an appointment stright away o decuss my results from my scans. She put too uch presure on me and too much fear by making it sound so serious.  She said the appontment cant wait 2 weeks. Questioned me on why cant i go in any sooner then 2 weeks.I told her the consultant is ringing about the results in August. She said there is no record of it on the computer. It cant wait that long. If it was that serious surly the consultant would of known when he did the colonoscopy and would of told me i had to have an mergancy opperation. Instead he wanted me to have a bowel scan and a pelvic and retum scan. She has no right to put this over bearing presure and fear in me. I dont know who the hell she belives she is. I already have mental health ADHD Autisum. My gp told me they cant make me do any thing i don't wont to do. Its made me not wont to go to the consultant for the result i just cant face all that presure and to be told i only hae so long to live or i need an emergeny opperation or both.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I’m sorry to read about what has happened. It sounds as though the phone call left you feeling frightened, pressured and overwhelmed, especially given your ADHD, autism and existing mental health difficulties.

Many people describe feeling overwhelmed and unsettled during this time. As you are autistic, the uncertainty may feel especially difficult, as your brain may keep jumping between best and worst-case scenarios so it’s not surprising you’re feeling this way

The person who called you may not know for certain what your results are, unless they have been specifically told by the consultant. Being asked to come in sooner does not automatically mean you’ve cancer or that you need emergency surgery, or that you have a life-threatening diagnosis.

Sometimes hospitals want to bring people back sooner because results are available, and they need to discuss further tests, because of scheduling changes, or because doctors would prefer not to leave something unchecked for weeks.

You can try ringing the hospital and explain that you have ADHD, autism and anxiety, and the recent phone call left you very distressed. Ask them to explain calmly why the appointment is being brought forward.

You are right that during a colonoscopy the consultant cannot always tell exactly what is going on just by looking. That is often why they arrange scans afterwards. The scans provide much more information than the colonoscopy alone.

I know it's easier said than done but try and take it one step at a time until you know more. Some people find talking it through with family and friends and keeping busy can sometimes help. Also try and focus on what you can control right now by eating a good diet, getting enough rest, and doing some gentle activities that you enjoy, The NHS website has some useful tips on breathing exercises for stress that you might find helpful.

I hope you know more soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
