Tamoxifen and Anti-depressants

I have been taking Citalopram for years and in October 2025 was diagnosed with Grade 2 breast cancer. Lumpectomy and Radiotherapy followed and now I'm on Tamoxifen for the next 5 years. My GP wants to change me to Sertraline instead of Citalopram because of the questionable interactions with Tamoxifen  but I've read mixed reviews and not sure ..can you give advice please

  • Hello Debsta and thanks for your post,

From what I have read there is mixed opinion about what antidepressants you should take with tamoxifen. As I am not involved in your care I would go back and discuss it with your GP or another GP in the practice to get their opinion. It is hard when there is so much information on the internet and through AI and knowing what to believe.

It is important to take in to account your doctors experience and hopefully a good understanding of your medical history to be able to judge what is best for you.

Do talk to them about your concerns and what you have read. You could also discuss this with your oncologist or Breast Care nurse as they may also have an opinion.

There is a thread on Breast Cancer Now's forum about tamoxifen and antidepressants which you might find helpful to read. The title is antidepressants and tamoxifen.

I hope this helps and you are able to speak to one of your team soon so you will feel comfortable with any decision that is made.

If you would like to talk any of this through with one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to give us a call.

the number to ring is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
