Hi I had melanoma 5 years ago. I recently had a biopsy on my leg and the result I got was “the mole we removed was more or less benign”. I’m wondering if anyone would know what they mean by “more or less’??
I'm not a nurse but I have been a melanoma patient for many years and I wanted to answer your question whilst you are waiting for the nurse on Monday (they don't work at the weekend).
I'm surprised at the terminology that was used by histology. I'm guessing that they mean the mole was possibly dysplastic (atypical/precancerous) but, for peace of mind, I would ask them for an explanation as to it's meaning, particularly with your history of melanoma. If it is dysplastic and you have 100+ moles, you are more at risk of another mole turning dysplastic so you need to carry on being vigilant with your mole checks. All in all though it's good that it wasn't another melanoma. Take care,
I can’t say for sure but the phrase 'more or less benign' may be suggesting that the mole did not look cancerous. The doctor may have been using informal language to say that it looked harmless, or that there were some minor changes in the mole but nothing that suggested melanoma.
As you've had melanoma before, it's reasonable to ask for the exact wording of the pathology report or speak to your doctor or dermatology team for clarification. as more or less' is not a standard pathology term. They can tell you precisely what was found.
