  • Hello cheese69 and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation and can understand how uncomfortable this must be for you.

There can be many reasons for lumps to occur in the anus and most of these reasons won't be as serious as cancer. It could be a skin tag or a haemorrhoid for example so try not to over think it for now.

Whilst you wait for your appointment you could talk to a pharmacist about whether there is any ointment or cream that you could apply if you find that it is causing irritation or discomfort. Often pharmacists have discreet rooms that you can go in to to discuss your situation.

It is good that you are eating a high fibre diet but I can understand the frustration at your frequent visits to the toilet. It is far better that you help prevent getting constipated. If you find that the frequent visits to the toilet continue try to look at what you are eating to see if there is a trigger. Do make sure that you drink enough fluid during the day. Sometimes it can help to keep a food diary.

I am not sure that as a health worker in the hospital you are in a position to find out sooner when your appointment is likely to be. You may find it a good idea to see if you can contact the secretary so you have an idea of how long you are likely to wait.

Sometimes it can help to take your mind off things if you decide to do one or two shifts but do see how you go.

When people are stressed about their health we often suggest that they look at various websites to help take their mind off their situation.

There is an NHS website called Every Mind Matters which you might find helpful to look at.

If the lump gets bigger or becomes more uncomfortable then do go back to your GP to see if they can arrange for you to be seen sooner.

If you would like to chat through any of this with one of the nurses on the helpline you are welcome to give us a call.

The number to ring is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
