2 week wait worries

Hi,

Just looking for somebody to talk to. I'm 28 and found a very small, hard lump on my cleavage line of my left breast. Was seen by my doctor on Wednesday and been put on the 2 week referral pathway.

I cannot stop Googling and reading my NHS notes. I live on my own and my thoughts are taking over me. I have so much stress at work and I'm not functioning. I haven't had my appointment letter through yet but I just cannot see how I'm going to gett through the weeks. Every time I Google I convince myself it's bad. I have no other symptoms but I'm sure my mind is playing tricks on me and telling me I've got new ones, mainly because I keep touching the lump.

Just want to talk to somebody.

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about the breast lump you have found and how it is playing on your mind.

It is very natural to feel worried and unsettled whilst awaiting an appointment for tests. Try as best you can to keep yourself busy with other things to occupy and distract your thoughts.

Avoid touching the lump or googling symptoms as it cannot tell you what is going on and only leads to more anxiety.

Remember that breast lumps can be caused by many things that aren't cancer such as simple fluid filled cysts and a build up of fatty tissue called fibroadenomas. The majority of women referred on a fast track to the breast unit won't go on to get a cancer diagnosis. Many will have a breast lump and benign (not cancer) breast condition that you can read more about on Breast Cancer Now.

Waiting is never easy but I hope you hear something soon and that everything will be okay for you. In the meantime do look at the tips and resources on the NHS every mind matters site.

Do get back in touch with any more questions and if you would prefer to talk over the phone the number to call is 0808 800 4040, we're here weekdays 9-5.

    Take care

    Naomi
