Worried about a mole

Hello two weeks ago i went to see a nurse about a mole on the back of my neck because it was firm and hurt and was itchy . The nurse was so lovely and took photos with a special camera and shown them to the doctor she said that it did not like anything sinster about it but was not a skin doctor so would make a appoinment to see one . Last wednesday i saw the skin doctor he looked at it twice and said no cancer . I was so so scared when ask has it always been the way it is i said yes but told him it was sore , tender , and itchy . What if me saying it had not changed in size it has always been big means i have cancer . Doctor said it is a unnas  naevus. Thank you

  • I think if the skin doctor told you your mole was a benign non-cancerous unnas naevus you can be certain that is exactly what it is.  If the doctor was in any doubt he would have taken a biopsy so to give you that diagnosis without biopsy is a positive outcome for you.

A few years ago my GP told me I “probably had” a BCC skin cancer but sent me to a skin doctor “just to confirm”.  She looked at it once & told me it was definitely not a BCC skin cancer but sebaceous hyperplasia- a harmless non-cancerous skin lesion.  We have to remember that the skin doctors are the experts- they are looking at skin conditions all day, every day & will know just by sight if something looks to be of enough concern to warrant a biopsy. We were both lucky to have been diagnosed with a non-cancerous condition by people who are experts in their field. Nothing you will have said would have stopped the doctor taking a biopsy if he felt it was likely to be something of concern.  Don’t worry- you’ve been given a good outcome by an expert.  Take care.

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about this mole you have that is concerning you. It is reassuring the dermatologist has assessed it as a unnas naevus which are usually benign (meaning non cancerous) type of mole.

However if you wish you can always ask your doctor to refer you for a second opinion if you remain worried and have noticed changes.

I hope you can get a greater sense of peace of mind soon.

Do get back if you have further questions or if you prefer give us a call on 0808 800 4040, we're here weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes

  • Hi now i am really worried the skin doctor had make a mistake

  • Hello and thanks for your further post

I think as you were seen by the dermatologist and had your mole assessed you should feel reassured. I say this because they are experts in all skin conditions. They diagnosed you with a unnas naevus which my colleague Naomi has told you is usually a benign mole.

If you remain worried about this, it's best to get in touch with your GP and ask for their advice. Usually the dermatologist would write to the GP explaining their findings and if any follow up care is needed which is unlikely with a benign mole.

    Best wishes,
