Weird lump

Hello,

I have a hard lump about 3/4cms down from my collarbone. It’s in that between space between breast and collarbone. I also have a flatter more moveable lump under my armpit.
I saw my GP and they have referred me to breast clinic, I am not too concerned about the armpit lump as it’s moveable so probably fits with my family history of fibrocystic breasts, but I feel a bit of a fraud. Will the clinic review the other lump? It’s not a breast one so I feel like it might be a waste of everyone’s time.

  • Hello and thanks for your enquiry,

The breast clinic will review both lumps, and you are in no way wasting anyone’s time by going.

Breast tissue extends all the way up to your collarbone (clavicle) and reaches out into your armpit. Because of this anatomy, any lump found between your breast and collarbone falls under the expertise of a breast specialist. Your GP referred you precisely because the breast clinic is the best place to look at these for you.

When you attend your appointment, the medical team will likely use a standard diagnostic approach called a triple assessment.

A specialist doctor will carefully feel your breasts, the upper chest area up to the collarbones, and both armpits, as part of a clinical breast examination. Depending on your age and tissue density, you will have an ultrasound, a mammogram, or potentially both. An ultrasound is highly effective at looking at the upper chest wall and the lymph nodes under the armpit. If either lump looks solid or requires closer inspection on the scan, a small tissue or fluid sample may be taken via a biopsy. This is a routine step used to definitively rule out serious conditions.

I hope that this helps, and that it goes well for you.

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
