First Post - Cholangiocarcinoma, stage 4 with liver mets

I was diagnosed in February and started chemo in April after a few false starts due to an infection causing a high temperature which the hospital could not identify.  Eventually my oncologist decided to go ahead with the chemo citing that he felt the infection was an effect of the cancer itself.  My cancer has metasticised to my liver (several small tumours) and I have been told is inoperable and incurable but is treatable.  I am unsure what this means.  Has anyone else received this sort of prognosis and how have you interpreted it?

I have just had my midway CT scan and await the results which I am told have to be delivered face to face by my consultant.  I have an appointment on 13th July when I am hopeful I should know more about whether the chemo is having any effect on the cancer.  I'd love to hear from anyone with cholangiocarcinoma and in particular any positive stories, if there is such a thing.  I am frightened and confused.  I never ever thought for one moment I would succumb to cancer.  It has come as such a shock to me.

  • Hello Emgee, and thank you for posting,

I’m so sorry to hear about your diagnosis. This must be a very difficult and uncertain time for you, and it’s completely understandable if you're feeling frightened, worried, or overwhelmed.

When doctors describe a cancer as treatable, they mean that while it may not be possible to remove or cure the cancer completely, treatment may still help to slow its growth, control symptoms, and improve quality of life.

I hope that others who have had similar experiences will see your post and share their thoughts and support. You may also find it helpful to post in our Living with Cancer section, where your message may reach more people who can relate to what you are going through.

You may already have seen this, but we have some information about cholangiocarcinoma and the treatments that may be used, which you might find helpful while waiting to speak with your team.

If you have any questions, concerns, or would simply like to talk things through with one of our cancer information nurses, please don't hesitate to get in touch. You can call our free helpline on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm.
