Chemo Question - no side effects yet. Does this mean they will start appearing as treatment continues?

Hubby had first chemo yesterday and he seems fine which is a bit worrying.  Does that mean he will get worse or is he one of the lucky ones?  How much is a piece of string I know?  Next time he's getting Oxaliplatin again and also Bevacizumab for the first time.  What difference will that make? And how often will he have

He sounds very croaky is that part of the lung spread?

I don't know the name of his Nurse Specialist yet.

Thanks for your help.

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

It can be a anxious time when a loved one starts their cancer treatment with so many unknowns. Every patient is different in how they respond and what side effects they may experience and often only time will tell.

As you say it can also depend on the drug/s they are having but try and take things one day at a time and see how things go.

I assume from the information about your hubby having rectal cancer on previous threads that he is probably receiving a chemo regime called FOLFOX that you can read about on the website. This includes the days he will receive each drug and the cycle lengths. This is often given in combination with Bevacizumab (also called Avastin) that you can also read about.

If you or your hubby are worried or have questions about his treatment it is best to speak with chemo team directly. In your hubby's treatment record there should be a number to call the chemo unit alongside an emergency number just in case something is urgent.

The treatment plan with the chemo regime should be written in there as well so do check this out to make sure I have sign posted you to the correct information above.

Not every hospital have allocated specialist nurses and I would have assumed your hubby would have been given this piece of information if we were allocated one. Sometimes it is a team of colorectal nurses but as your hubby is having chemo it is the chemo nurses you should contact with any concerns for now.

I can't say whether the croaky voice you have noticed is linked to the lung mets or something else. If your hubby is worried about this or it gets worse do let the doctor know so they can assess him further.

I hope this is helpful and wish your hubby all the best

    Take care

    Naomi
