Sore eye after SCC exclusion

I had a SCC exclusion and skin graft very close to my eye 5 weeks ago. The big scab where the SCC fell over yesterday but it's right by my eye on my nose side. My eye is hooded from the op but it's so sore today. Is there anything I put in my eye that might relieve the soreness please?? I don't want to use standard eye drops in case they're the wrong thing or contain anything that might irritate the tissue now exposed which is sore anyway. I can't ring my Cancer Care nurse as I'm deaf and I wasn't given any follow up advice. I'm seeing my Consultant next Weds.   Thanks Julia

  • Hello Julia and thank you for getting in touch

I’m really sorry to hear that you’ve needed surgery and a skin graft for SCC, and that your eye has now become sore.

As we’re not involved in your care, we can’t say what is causing this. Some discomfort around the nose and nearby area is common after surgery, but a new or sudden sore eye, especially close to the graft, should be checked to rule out irritation or infection.

As you’re not able to call, you could try contacting your hospital team by email or an online portal if available. If possible, someone could contact them on your behalf, or you could arrange to see your GP. You can also contact NHS 111, and they may be able to arrange for you to be seen at an urgent care clinic.

If your eye becomes very painful, red, swollen, or your vision changes, it’s important to seek urgent medical care.

I’m sorry we can’t be more specific, but I hope you’re able to get this checked soon. Please feel free to get back in touch if you need further support.

    Take care

    Jemma
