Chemo not curative - is this bad news?

Consutants letter says this for husband.  Was prescribed before possible operation.

Im assuming that this isn't good news.

  • Hi MrsBlueSky and thank you for your post.

I’m sorry to hear about your husband’s situation. I can understand why this wording feels worrying.

When doctors say chemotherapy is “not curative”, it usually means it is not expected to completely cure the cancer.

But it can still be very helpful. It may be used to shrink the cancer, slow it down, or make an operation more likely to go ahead.

So while it may not be the news you were hoping for, it does not mean that nothing can be done.

There may still be treatment options that can help your husband.

It would be a good idea to speak with his hospital specialist or nurse, as they know his situation best.

They can explain what the treatment is aiming to do and whether surgery is still possible.

It might help to talk things through with one of our nurses on the helpline. You can call for free on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

    Kind regards
