Confused

I've been diagnosed with a small tumour on my liver and at outpatients I was advised it will be removed via either ablation or surgery.   Then, following clinical meeting,  I have been advised that further tests are required,  including a biopsy via endoscopy.  I understood that biopsy was a) risky due to risk of bleeding and b) not required as contrast dye on both CT and MRI scans identify it clearly.  Why now would they decide on this route?

I'm waiting for my nurse to get back to me

  • Hello and thank you for getting in touch,

I’m really sorry to hear what you’re going through. Waiting for tests and results can be very worrying, and, understandably, you’re feeling unsettled, especially with the change in what you were told.

Although it can feel frustrating, it’s quite common for plans to change as doctors gather more information. Sometimes scans don’t give a clear enough picture on their own. When this happens, a biopsy may be recommended to look more closely at the cells. This can help doctors make a clear and accurate diagnosis so they can decide on the most appropriate care.

You’re right that a liver biopsy does carry some risks, and it’s normal to feel concerned about this. Your medical team will have carefully weighed up the potential benefits and risks before recommending it. In many cases, the information gained from the biopsy is important in guiding the next steps in treatment or care.

It might help to speak with your nurse or doctor about your concerns. They can explain why the biopsy is needed in your situation, what the risks are, and how they will work to keep you as safe as possible.

I hope you hear back from your nurse soon and can get the clarity you need.
