Bowel cancer that's spread - is this stage 4?

Hello all

I'm looking for some answers , person X has been diagnosed with bowel cancer that's spread to the lymphnodes and liver .

I know I should have asked the nurses but I was too afraid at the time is this considered stage 4 cancer ?

Can much be done ?

Thank you

  • Hello and thanks for posting.

I'm sorry to read about your relatives situation. This must be a difficult time for you all as a family.

Bowel cancer that has spread to the liver is known as a stage 4 cancer.

Treatment for advanced bowel cancer can vary. Doctors take into consideration how extensive the cancer is, and if someone is well enough to have treatment (general health). Any treatment that may be given is aimed at slowing the cancer down and easing symptoms.

We have information on our website on how advanced bowel cancer may be treated.

If your relative has a bowel specialist nurse involved in their care then perhaps they can provide you both with support and further information. You often have to call and leave them a message and they will get back to you.

I hope this is of some use to you. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Hello and thanks for your further post

Although Stage 4 means that the cancer has spread to another part of the body, it does not automatically mean its terminal. Many patients can have treatment to control the cancer, often for months or years.

Terminal means when doctors can’t control the cancer with treatment anymore.

When patients are not having any active treatment, it doesn't mean that nothing else can be done. They can be given supportive (palliative) care, with medicines to control any symptoms they may have. Palliative (supportive) care involves easing troublesome symptoms and aiming to improve your quality of life and providing emotional support to the patient and family members. You can read more about their role on the Macmillan website. You can also read more about palliative care on the Marie Curie website.

I hope this reply is of some use.
