FIT test result at 400

Hey guys,

I'm really worried because I've had some changes to my bowel habits but I can't remember how long for. It's very smelly and only the loser side, I also have a chronic swollen lymph nodes that I've seen the Drs for multiple times over the last 2 years.

Recently I got a FIT test and the results show blood in my stool with a reading of 400ug Hb/g and I'm so scared that it's cancer.

I'm on holiday and I'm going to book a GP appointment for when I get back but I'm so so scared. I need some reassurance.

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

I'm sorry you are feeling worried about your recent FIT (faecal immunochemical test) result.

When the FIT test shows any amount of blood you will be referred urgently for a colonoscopy. This happens whether the FIT result is 10 or 400. What matters is that hidden blood has been found, not the number itself.

A higher FIT result does not mean you are more likely to have cancer. Many non‑cancerous conditions can cause a positive FIT, including polyps, haemorrhoids, and inflammatory bowel conditions.

Waiting to see your GP and waiting to go for tests can cause a lot of anxiety. I know it's easier said than done but try and take things one day at a time until you know more.

Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
