6 weeks off BEVACIZUMAB!!

I am about to have cycle 9 of 12 of my chemotherapy for cancer of the caecum - this is administered every two weeks. I am having Folfax and part of that is ‘BEVACIZUMAB’. In February of this year when I started Chemotherapy, my Cancer Antigen reading was 3773 and has dropped significantly to a reading of 33 now and My CEA which was 61 has dropped to 8. These reductions are due to the BEVACIZUMAB as far as I know.

Now, with just 4 cycles to go, the BEVACIZUMAB is to be stopped for 6 weeks or so. This is so another hospital can replace my urinary stent after 6 months since fitting in a couple of weeks time. I understand this change needs to be done, as the safe life of the stent is 6months, but I’m so worried that my tumour markers will rise dramatically again. Is that likely to happen do you think? I certainly don’t want to go backwards with my treatment.

Kind regards.

Mike

  • Hello Mike and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation.

It is good news to hear that Bevacizumab has had such a positive effect on your cancer. Hopefully having had 9 cycles out of your 12 will continue to keep your cancer under control but of course there are no certainties. It is important that you have a suitable break before your stent has been fitted. The doctors have guidelines about the timings of when procedures need to be done.

I would talk to your doctors about your concerns as they have all your medical information and will hopefully be able to reassure you.

If you would like to talk any of this through with one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to give us a call.

The number to ring is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
