Worried: I have just been diagnosed with squamous cell cancer in a polyp in my anus

I have just been diagnosed with squamous cell cancer in a polyps in my anus . This came as a shock as three other polyps that were removed in my first colonoscopy March this year were benign and after the  second colonoscopy which removed the lower polyps the doctor said it didn’t look suspicious at all . I was called on Wednesday and by Thursday had received a phone call from a colorectal consultant, a meeting with the doctor who removed the last polyps and two scans, ct and mri . I am waiting for an appointment to have a pet scan .
my head is reeling as I really didn’t expect this , I have no symptoms and am currently recovering from a gall bladder removal as had a 3 cm stone that was causing pain , done so I would be in the  best health to care for my partner who has stomach cancer and will soon be undergoing a total gastroectomy and further chemo .
I don’t know how we are going to cope if I am receiving treatment while he is recovering from such a huge operation and more chemo .
I do still have some pain in my right side and am hoping this is just post surgical recovery.
I feel a bit defeated

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your recent cancer diagnosis. You’ve had a lot happen all at once, especially with with the added stress of your partner having stomach cancer and about to undergo surgery followed by chemotherapy. This is a lot to process and it's understandable to feel overwhelmed, scared, and defeated and wonder how you may cope.

Because you had no symptoms and the cancer was found in a polyp, there is a possibility that this may have been diagnosed early, but the scans will confirm this for sure. Many of these cancers can be treated very effectively, often without major surgery.

The pain on your right side is much more likely from your recent gallbladder surgery, which can take time to settle.

I know it's easier said than done but try and take things one day at a time until you know more. We have information on our website, about support at home on our website. If help with personal care is needed the hospital can arrange a care package to help at home.

Maggie's centres provides a variety of support for people affected by cancer. The cancer care map also lists local support services that may also help.

I hope this is of some use. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
