Colon cancer

Hiya

trying to cope with a recent diagnosis. Did a home test and then had to have an appointment for colonoscopy, they found 17 polyps one cancerous, this was 1st April. Now still waiting for an operation date, seems a long time, what are your expectations of wait time? Thanks

  • Hi and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your situation

and I can appreciate the worry you have about how long you are waiting for  surgery.

In the UK there are targets for maximum waiting times to start treatment.

For example no more than 31 days wait between the decision the doctor agreed the treatment plan and the start of treatment.

It seems from what you have said that you have been waiting longer than this.

We have more information about cancer waiting times which you may find helpful.

Hospitals will do their best to meet the cancer waiting targets, however many are finding this difficult to achieve.

This could be due to staff shortages and capacity.

If you have not already done this you might want to contact the hospital's Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS)  to tell them your experience.

It might also be a good idea for you to let your GP know that you are  still waiting.

While no one can give an absolute assurance that your cancer will not get worse whilst waiting, please know that most cancers grow slowly and waiting a few weeks is unlikely to affect the overall situation.

Waiting is difficult so I hope you know more about your situation soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support

It might help to talk things through with one of our nurses on the helpline. You can call for free on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

    Kind regards

    Tina
