Mum's Stage 4b cervical cancer

Hi, my Mum is 72 and frail, she recently received the devastating news that she has stage 4b cervical cancer which has spread to her lymph nodes, her kidney, uterus and lungs. She has chosen not to go ahead with chemotherapy/radiotherapy which I completely respect. With this in mind could anyone give me any sort of idea how long she may live please? She is sleeping a lot and her breathing has started to become a little irregular. Thank you in advance.

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I am very sorry to hear about your mum, it sounds like this is a difficult time for you both.

Every patient is different and the time someone may have left will depend on a number of factors. Whilst the stage ( size and extent of the cancer and how quickly it is growing) will play a part in this, the general health and fitness level of the patient will also affect this.

As no one here is directly involved in your mums care we can't give a prognosis for how long she may have, i'm afraid. This is better answered by the specialist team involved in her care so do ask her doctor if they can give a rough idea.

There can be signs that someone is approaching the end of life such as sleeping more, eating and drinking less, losing control of bladder and bowels and so on that are explained more on the last few weeks and days pages of the website.

Towards the end patients may need more input from community palliative care services if choosing to die at home. Do ask about this if your mum isn't already known to them.

I'm sorry if we haven't answered your question in the way you had hoped but do get back in touch if you have more questions. You are also welcome to call us on 0808 800 4040, we're here weekdays 9-5.

    Take care

    Naomi
