Stopping Chemo

Hi. I’m in remission since April (3 months post diagnosis), I have 3 chemo sessions left (A+BVD for CHL) but because I’ve really struggled with my neutrophils and haemoglobin- both critically low throughout treatment my consultant suggested foregoing any further chemo.

i have a week to consider the options but I‘m concerned that if I don’t complete the course it will increase the risk of a relapse or return of the lymphoma. The consultant doesn’t seem overly concerned but I am

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I am sorry you are worried about the change in treatment plan for your Classic Hodgkin's Lymphoma (CHL) that your doctor has suggested, but is it good to hear that you are in remission.

The doctors looking after you are best placed to answer questions about changes as they are experts in you and your cancer. They know the cancer's behaviour and when to weigh up the benefits with the risks of continuing treatments.

When chemotherapy is severely affecting someone's blood results and immune system the doctors may think this as too harsh a risk compared to any benefits of those final few chemotherapy sessions, so a decision to reduce dosage or stop treatment all together can happen.

It is good to remember your doctor will be following up with you to check for any changes, we have information on follow ups after treatment on our website.

If you remain concerned about the decisions made do talk it through with your team, maybe to your specialist nurse (CNS) if you have one. We have information on changes to your treatment plan on our website if helpful.

Take care, and if you want to talk things through with the nurses on our helpline do call 0808 800 4040. Lines are open mon-fri, 9-5.

    Sarah.
