Thyroid cancer - with a U5 nodule, is it possible the FNA will show it isn't cancer?

Hi ,

I have recently had a scan on my thyroid , I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid and prescribed thyroxine 50mg,

I still felt something wasn't right so I went back the doctors because my neck felt swollen,

I was sent for a scan which has come back as a U5 (malignant) nodule,

I am waiting for an appointment for a FNA and I am just wondering with a U5 finding on the nodule is it possible the FNA will show it may not be cancer?
any help is appreciated so very much right now as I am very worried and scared.

Thank you

  • Hello and thanks for posting

The U (Ultrasound) classification is the likelihood of a nodule being malignant. A U5 rating is the highest likelihood or suspicion of being malignant at between 70-90%. But it is not a confirmed diagnosis, and the biopsy (FNA) is the only way to know for sure.

I know it's easier said than done but try and take it one step at a time until you know more. Some people find talking it through with family and friends and keeping busy can sometimes help.

Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
