Collagen supplements and wound healing. What can I do to help with recovery from SCC being removed from my shin?

Do you think taking collagen supplements can help with wound healing? I have had a scc removed from my shin leaving a large wound. Wondering if there is anything I can do to assist healing other than good diet which I have. I am normally a slow healer, age 74 and poor circulation in feet - they are normally pretty cold.

Thank you

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your recent surgery and can appreciate you wishing to do all you can to help with the healing process.

Unfortunately we can't advise patients about supplements so do check with your own doctor to check their advice about collagen in particular.

From what I know the evidence for collagen supplements is mixed and most patients will be advised to focus on a nutritionally rich diet high in protein, iron, zinc and vitamins. So plenty of things like lean chicken, meat, oily fish, fruit and leafy green vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans, lentils, tofu, edamame, eggs, milk, yoghurt, cheese and so on.

Do make sure you also get plenty of rest and sleep as this is also important in the healing process.

I hope this is helpful but if you are concerned about your wound do speak with your doctor or nurse so they can properly assess and advise you.

Do get back in touch if you need to or if you prefer give us a call on 0808 800 4040, we're here week days 9-5 except bank holidays.

    Wishing you all the best

    Naomi
