Teeth extraction and radiotherapy

I am dues to start radiotherapy in 2 weeks for tonsil cancer and the Dentistry Restoration team want to do 4 extractions 3 months after radiotherapy is finished. I would like the teeth removed before treatment, would it be wise to put the treatment off for 1 week whilst get the teeth removed?

  • Talk to your care team. They can offer help and tips etc.

  • Hi fi

When I had radiotherapy to the jaw I had 3 teeth removed before surgery which was 2 months before starting radiotherapy. One week would not be long enough for your mouth to heal. Go with the recommendation of your team planning your treatment schedule.

  • Hello Fi33 and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation. it is very difficult without being involved in your situation to say why you are not having your teeth removed first. This maybe because your team feel that they need to get on with your treatment first rather then waiting for your gum to heal. Every case is very individual and what works for one person may not be the same for the next person.

Having a delay for 3 months will hopefully give a chance for the area to repair itself. Your mouth will be assessed once you have radiotherapy to make sure that it is safe to extract any teeth.

I would have a conversation with your team at the hospital so you can understand more.

Every decision will have been made by a team of doctors, including the dental department, to work out how best to treat the area.

You are welcome to chat through any of this with one of the helpline nurses. The number to ring is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • Thank you all for your responses. I have now been given an appointment for tomorrow for the extractions. This gives me 11 days to heal before the start of radiotherapy.
