Worried outta my mind

Hi, im 41 with a strong family history of Breast cancer and for the last few months I’ve noticed my right breast feeling and looking much fuller than the other, I found a lump and have dark sometimes bloody discharge from the nipple, nipple has changed shape and darker and scaly, have burning/itching and a rash like eczema next too amd on the nipple. Have got an urgent referral to the breast clinic and told to stop my contraception pill as it “has severe contraindications for those with cancer” and I am absolutely bricking it!!! Can’t eat, not sleeping properly, im convinced it cancer and losing my mind

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about the symptoms you have and that you are now awaiting a breast clinic appointment.

This is understandably a worrying time for you but until you have been seen by the breast unit and further tests such as imaging and biopsies have been taken no one can say what is causing this.

Try and sit tight as best as you can for now. The uncertainty of waiting and not knowing can be very unsettling for people so try and keep yourself busy with other things to help pass the time.

Avoid googling anything more for now until you have the full facts about your situation. It cannot diagnose or say what might be the matter for any individual i'm afraid.

If you have a partner or a close friend or family member to support you at this time that can be a really good thing to have.

Do also look after yourself by eating a healthy diet, taking some light exercise and getting some fresh air to ensure you get some good rest and sleep.

I hope you get some more clarity soon but do get back in touch if you need to. The helpline is also here weekdays 9-5 on 0808 800 4040 if you prefer to speak to a nurse over the phone.

    Wishing you all the best

    Take care

    Naomi

  • Hi ArtyFarty,

A very warm welcome to the forum.

I am sorry to hear about your symptoms and the worry they are causing you. I was in a similar position when I was first diagnosed. I had lost my mum to secondary breast cancer, along with several other relatives. I found a lump, saw my GP and was referred to the breast clinic. I hadn't realised how much diagnosis, treatment and after care had advanced in the interim. Fortunately, there was just no comparison between the experiences which we both had.

Within a year I had 2 diagnoses of cancer and 1 of pre-cancer. I had a lumpectomy the first time and a double mastectomy for the second bout, followed by hormone treatment for 6½ years. That was all 17 years ago now and I still lead a busy and fulfilling life.

You have done the right thing by getting these symptoms investigated. Sadly, all of the side-effects associated with the wait are sentiments that many of us are familiar with - it does get easier once you know what you're dealing with. Our CRUK nurse Naomi, has given you some excellent advice.

How soon is your appointment? I sincerely hope that it goes well.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
