Hair loss - will it continue after I've moved from EC to Paclitaxel? I'm also using the cold cap but getting more nausea. How can I avoid this?

Hi. Having had my 4th EC cycle using cold cap I have shedded around 50% of my hair.  During/following the 4th cycle I noticed more nausea than I’ve had in the past. Could this be due to less hair protecting my scalp from the cold cap?

I am moving to Paclitaxel (12 weeks) and wondered if my hair loss is expected to continue and I should try to keep tolerating the cold cap? And if so, any tips on how to avoid the nausea.

thanks for anyone’s advice.

  • Hi Lucy and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about the side effects that you are experiencing.

Your increased nausea is probably not related to your hair loss though I can understand that losing so much hair can make having the cold cap really uncomfortable.

Do let your team know at the hospital as they may need to adjust your medication. How patients tolerate chemotherapy can vary as time goes on which is why patient's are usually assessed before each course of treatment.

We have a page on our website about managing the effects of nausea from cancer drugs. There is information on different medications and different foods that you can eat that can help manage sickness. Some patients find ginger quite helpful in managing sickness. it is important to eat regularly. Small frequent meals are probably better then larger helpings. Trying to drink adequate amounts of fluid can also help.

Paclitaxel usually causes hair loss though continuing with the cold cap may slow it down a bit. If it remains uncomfortable you may consider stopping it. Do remember that your hair will grow back once the treatment has stopped.

The charity Maggies have information on hair loss. They also run workshops on managing hair loss including where you can purchase scarves.

I do hope that some of these links will be useful.

Do give the nurses a ring on the helpline if you would like to talk any of this through.

The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
