Hpv, smears & biopsy’s…

Hello guys bit if a long one just looking to see if anyone has gone through anything similar..

so I’ve always had trouble with periods, pain during intercourse and after, bleeding after intercourse, discharge constantly and pain constantly in my stomach.

I had a cervical erosion, treated it twice and it’s basically gone.

I’ve got 2 little girls who were both spontaneous premature natural labour

I’ve had all clear smears from the doctors and colposcopy clinic but when they done a biopsy it’s come up hpv.. they booked me a year later but didn’t do another biopsy just the smear again which I had a feeling would be clear as they always are, I’m just worried another biopsy wouldn’t be clear but I’ve been discharged again now.

we have a history of cervical cancer in the family so obviously I’m concerned and it’s not helping with my anxiety at the moment.

sorry for the long one.

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

If you are having ongoing symptoms then do discuss them with your GP so they can assess you and arrange any further tests as needed. Do remember there can be many reasons for gynaecological issues and most of them won't be linked to cancer but if ongoing do need to be looked into to try and find and treat the cause.

It is good to hear you attend for any necessary cervical screening, this programme is designed to prevent cervical cancer by picking up abnormality at an early stage where it can be monitored or treated until everything returns to normal.

HPV is responsible for most abnormal cell changes in the cervix which is why this is checked for as the first test. IF this is negative you will be returned to routine screening. If positive the cells are checked for abnormality and if positive you are seen in colposcopy. If they are negative they repeat the screening in 1 year to check the HPV has cleared.

HPV is extremely common but in most people the body will clear it within a couple of years of coming into contact without it causing any issues.

Try not to worry but do speak with your GP about any ongoing symptoms that are concerning you.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
