Cousin has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer

My elderly cousin has been diagnosed with cancer pancreas stomach and liver. She is 90. She had a Ct scan 9 days ago and got the outline of the Cancer from GP. She became unwell on the following Wednesday I took her to GP who found low BP anemia and dehydration. My cousin Gillian was supposed to meet with GI specialist last Friday but clinic was cancelled.

Gillian was medically discharged on Friday but because she lives alone she she had to stay at the hospital until we get a prognosis from Consultant this Wednesday before she decides to go home or into a home.

Gillian is now in an elderly persons ward  She is very miserable waiting to hear news from Consultant on Wednesday.

Because of the bank holiday no one is able to help her except family. But she could do with more support and preparation for the time ahead.

  • Hi there and thank you for the post

I am sorry to hear about your cousin and how unwell she is. This must be a very difficult time for you both and appreciate you wishing to get a better understanding of the situation.

Your cousin should know more once she speaks to the consultant on Wednesday about the next steps. However as the weekend has now passed there may be another doctor on the ward to answer any questions in the meantime.

In terms of emotional and practical support many hospitals have cancer support centres within them where patients and loved ones can pop into or telephone for more support and information. Do ask the ward she is on or search online for the details of the nearest Macmillan or Maggie centre.

Hopefully your cousin will also be allocated a specialist or Macmillan nurse who can support her at this time. They can signpost and refer her onto other services as needed. You may wish to take a look at the cancer care map that lists local cancer support and charities by postcode as well.

Please get back in touch if you have more questions or feel free to call us on 0808 800 4040 if you prefer. We're here weekdays, 9-5.

    Best wishes,

    Naomi
