What follows a lumpectomy?

I had a lumpectomy 10 days ago and have a follow-up appointment in just over three weeks time. I am feeling OK but obviously anxious about the next steps. Can someone please let me know how long I will have to wait until further treatment is scheduled.

  • Hi GillyW and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to learn that you have required a lumpectomy.

It is completely normal to feel anxious during this waiting period.

After a lumpectomy the sample is sent to the pathology lab to be biopsied.

If the results come back with a cancer diagnosis, the case is discussed in a Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meeting where all the different doctors involved will discuss your case and work out a treatment plan.

The MDT approach is recognised as the most effective way to reach balanced recommendations based on research and NICE Guidelines.

The results and treatment plan will be discussed with you at your next appointment in just over three weeks time.

We have more information about treatment options for breast cancer on our website.

Most women who have a lumpectomy only require radiotherapy and / or hormone therapy, but treatment options will depend on the results and are tailored to the individual.

If further treatment is required, such as radiotherapy, then you normally wait between 6-8 weeks to allow the wound to fully heal.

Breast Cancer Now have information on what to ask your hospital specialist at your appointment which you may find helpful.

I hope your recovery is uneventful and you know more soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support

It might help to talk things through with one of our nurses on the helpline. You can call for free on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

    Kind regards

    Tina

  • Results after lumpectomy include a clearer picture a better diagnosis and understanding, node biopsy if positive nodes maybe a further operation to clear nodes , this is rare but this happened to me

then depending on results discuss chemo radiation and hormone therapy

    good luck lovely
