Have had high risk hpv for 5 years but after my last smear I've been referred to gynaecology oncology. What does this mean?

Hi everyone,ŵould like to share my story with you, feel free to give your thoughts and advice.

So for the past 5 years I have had high risk hpv,and go every year for a smear /colposcopy,and biopsies taken sometimes,I had my last smear by a colposcopist in March 20th this year, had a letter which  said my results had gone to multi disciplinary team, and will be in touch,m n d meeting was on 22nd April, then an appointment come through for gynaecological oncology, why gynaecological oncology?,have they found something besides hpv?.find the whole thing very odd,my results have never gone to m n d before

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear you have persisting HPV and appreciate the worry this can cause.

Unfortunately without being involved in your care no one here can say what the result of you recent colposcopy and biopsy has shown and what has been discussed in the MDT.

Sit tight as best you can for now and see what the doctor has to say at your appointment. Try not to over think the fact that you are seeing an oncology gynaecologist as once again this could mean a number of different things.

However I will say that when HPV is ongoing over a number of years a discussion does take place to decide the next steps and what the plan is moving forward.

I hope you know and have a better understanding of your situation soon.

Take care and you know where we are if you need to get back in touch. The helpline is also open week days 9-5 on 0808 800 4040 if you prefer to talk over the phone.
