Sinus problems - could this be a long term side effect from the radiotherapy I had for my tongue cancer 2 years ago?

Hi I had base of tongue cancer 2 years ago  - I had surgery by tors and neck dissection then RT on my neck.  I now seem to constantly get sinus infections. Could this be from the RT - recently had scans and all good.
many thanks

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about what's been happening and can appreciate that this must be frustrating for you.

Radiotherapy to the head and neck can make sinus infections more likely, even years later, because it can dry and affect how your sinuses clear mucus.

But it's not the only possible cause. Things like allergies or normal infections can also play a role. If infections keep happening, do speak to your GP. They may consider referring you to an ENT specialist for further advice.

I hope this helps. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
