squamous cell carcinoma - urgent removal needed but appointment given is near the end of June. Is it ok to wait so long?

I was diagnosed yesterday with a squamous cell carcinoma that has been growing over last 3 weeks. The consultant said i need an urgent removal but the appointment has come through for 26th June! I am very worried as I have previously had cancer of the prostate too. Is this ok to wait so long?

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I am sorry that the wait for your surgery is causing you this concern. It is not unusual for urgent surgery to be arranged in this sort of time frame, and it shouldn't affect the doctors expected outcome.

There may be other tests, calls or contact that you need to have before this main appointment date that they need to do before you have the surgery. Your hospital will let you know about these.

Waiting for appointment or results can be incredibly hard. Do try and take each day as it comes.

I hope you have support at this time, but if you want to talk things through then call our nurses on 0808 800 4040. Lines are open mon-fri, 9-5.

    Sarah.
