Thyroid cancer confirmed on one side - should I have treatment on the other?

Hi

I have recently had surgery in which my left lobe was taken as it had a nodule on it.

Today I received my histology result and it is Follicullar cancer I am aged 76

should I have the other side operated on and have the radioactive treatment

thankyou

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your recent diagnosis and can appreciate this must be a worrying time for you.

If your thyroid cancer was small and localised, you may not need further surgery. If it’s larger or faster growing, doctors may suggest removing the other side.

Some people need radioactive iodine. It’s usually used if there is a higher risk of the cancer coming back.

Your specialist team are better placed to advise you on what needs to happen next as they are familiar with all your medical details, but give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
