Efudex unsuccessful. Been using Eucerin instead but any heat brings out red patches on my face. Is there anything else I could use?

I used Efudex on my face for 4 weeks in 2022 horrendous since then been using Eucerin aquaphor at night and Eucerin actinic control 100 SPF what I’m finding is any heat at all brings the patches out red. I also wear sun hat to protect my face   Is there anything else I could try

I tried to insert photo unfortunately unsuccessfully

Thank you

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

People can't upload photos to cancer chat and even if this was possible we can't give a medical opinion i'm afraid.

I'm sorry to hear about your previous treatment using efudix and the effects of this you are still experiencing in the warmer weather. Unfortunately efudix causes photosensitivity meaning the skin is even more sensitive to sunlight and this in turn can cause discoloration and a change to the natural pigmentation to the skin. It is common for the skin to redden and burn more easily in the sun.

It sounds like you are doing everything you should be by applying a high factor sunscreen and regular moisturising of the skin. It is important to cover up in the sun and heat of the day ( generally between 10-2) with a hat and loose long sleeve clothing. You may also wish to try other face creams that can help with pigmentation or make up to try and cover this over.

If you have any concerns about these skin changes do discuss it with your GP so they can assess your skin for advice and guidance.

I am sorry we can't be of more help but hope you find some more ways to settle this redness on your face.

    Best wishes

    Naomi

  • Hi tagtag

I think you are taking all the correct precautions to try and prevent further sun damage by wearing a hat with a wide brim and suncream every day. The sun damaged area will become reddened with heat no matter what you do. Most cosmetics have UV sun protection so masking with these is an option.  Eucerin is very good quality but unnecessarily expensive, any good branded SPF 30 to 50 suncream will do the task just as well. Calypso and Nivea are highly rated brands that wont break the bank. Don't forget to protect your lips. UV levels are now (April)  creeping above 4 in UK which can easily burn fair skin. Im currently using Ufudix on multiple AK sites and it is a misery as you say. Im also receiving immunotherapy for advanced metastatic skin cancer so am acutely aware of the importance of protecting skin. Enjoy the coming summer safely.
