3 years on anastrozole - does the tiredness ever go away?

Hello. I understand that anastrozole can make you tired when you start them. I have been in them for 3 years now and wondered if this side effect can stay with you for this length of time as I do lack energy and feel weary quite often. Many thanks Jan

  • Hi JanKay,

I am sorry to hear that you are so tired. I took Tamoxifen for 1 year, then changed to Letrozole for a further 6½ years. I hate to tell you that I felt  really tired all of the time. The side-effects vary from person to person. Some people are plagued by them while others don't have any. Speak to your breast care nurse. Sometimes a particular brand of the medication can help, as can changing the time of day that you take it.

I sincerely hope that you manage to find a solution.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you Jolamine. Glad to know that the tiredness is still part of the anastrazole . I take it in the evening so I don't do much. Best wishes Jan

  • Hi JanKay,

Have a word with your breast care nurse and see if she can give you any useful suggestions.

  • Hello JanKay and thanks for posting

Tiredness can last for years on anastrozole, not just at the start. This happens because the drug keeps oestrogen very low, and oestrogen affects energy, sleep, muscles and mood.

Many people feel weary, drained, or lacking energy even after being on it for a long time. You are not imagining it and it is a recognised long‑term side effect.

Sometimes there is a specific medical cause for which there might be a remedy such as anaemia, thyroid changes, or vitamin deficiencies so do get some input about this from your doctors or specialist nurse about this.

Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

  • Thank you Celene. I feel reassured now that I am not imagining it. I'm taking lots of vitamins and consciousness of what I eat so will plod on and see GP if it doesn't get better. Jan
